DRI uncovers large-scale SAFTA fraud in areca imports
The **DRI** exposed a network illegally importing areca nuts, misdeclaring origin to evade significant customs duties under **SAFTA**.
- DRI revealed South-East Asian areca nuts misdeclared as Bangladeshi to claim SAFTA benefits.
- This fraud potentially defrauded the exchequer of over Rs. 2,500 crore.
- Nine persons have been arrested and Rs. 75 lakh cash, 160 MT areca nuts seized.
- A Customs Broker firm's licence was suspended for facilitating these imports.

India hosts BRICS Environment Working Group Meetings 2026
India is hosting the 12th BRICS Environment Ministers Meeting and related events in New Delhi on 17-18 August 2026.
- The 12th BRICS Environment Ministers Meeting will be held on 18.08.2026 in New Delhi.
- The event is under India’s BRICS Chairship 2026 theme: ‘Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability’.
- Four priority areas are: Sustainable Lifestyles, Afforestation, Circular Economy, and Adaptation.
- The BRICS Environment Working Group (EWG) was established in 2015.
- The Contact Group on Climate Change and Sustainable Development was established in 2024.
